Kitchen Storage Idea

Woohoo got myself on IKEA HACKERS!!! I am and always have been an avid reader of the IKEA Hackers website by Jules. I've copied a few over the years but this time I've had a go at my own! OK once you've read it you will realise all I've actually done is cut 25mm off each side of a bar :) IKEA Hackers probably have some link referral protection, but if you paste https://www.ikeahackers.net/2017/12/easy-kitchen-door-storage.html into your url it works. If you care that is. The problem was simple, utilise as much space as possible in the cupboard under the sink and make things we use a lot (dishwasher and washing tablets) more accessible. If you look round there are loads of articles on how to make efficient use of cupboards, but I always liked ones that attached to the door and util...
Nest Thermostat Hot Water controlled by Alexa

Nest Thermostat Hot Water controlled by Alexa

For anyone that has a Nest thermostat and an Amazon Alexa, they will know there is one feature distinctly lacking. Voice boosting of the hot water. After further investigation, this is not only missing from he Alexa app but is missing from the actual API. I think that this is probably due to the function being UK only. Initially I took to the community pages to get more information. The first post dates back to Oct '16 and the official line was "Thanks for letting us know that this is an important feature. Duly noted! We have communicated the extremely strong interest to our development team. The request is in the queue for consideration and will be seriously considered. We value your input, and we do not discuss future schedules or internal planning in this community." This was mid A...
Viral WordPress Theme Homepage Image Size Problem

Viral WordPress Theme Homepage Image Size Problem

Software Dev
After finally working out how to add a featured image to the homepage for posts I ran into a problem where the images were appearing as full sized. This meant over 10Mb of image files were being downloaded when the homepage was loaded. There may be a way to select a lower resolution file but I couldnt find it, if there is let me know in the comments! Wordpress has a specific function that loads a thumbnail based on a given size. After digging through the files for the Viral theme I narrowed the post code for the homepage down to /wp-content/themes/viral/template-parts/content.php Glancing at this I could see that line 17 $viral_image = wp_get_attachment_image_src( get_post_thumbnail_id() , 'viral-blog-header' ); This gets the full size image of the file. Instead of this usin...
Hotel TV + Amazon Fire Stick Problem

Hotel TV + Amazon Fire Stick Problem

General Wandering
For the last couple of months, when I travel with work I have been taking my Amazon Fire Stick with me so I can catch up with the new Top Gear called The Grand Tour. One thing I will say is that I have been slightly disappointed with it, I understand the need for it to be humours but it also omits information about the cars that I would actually like to know. I keep my Fire Stick in an old Bose headphones leather case, it fits perfectly. Anyway yesterday I rocked up to my hotel, plugged in my Fire Stick and went to change the source to HDMI. After 5 minutes of searching the TV for some buttons I couldn’t find a thing. Next I took a look at the remote only to find it missing the buttons needed to change the source. A quick google for the Samsung TV model HG40ED690DB (Type No
My thoughts on the new Carbon GT!

My thoughts on the new Carbon GT!

Im sure that loads of people with the board will be posting pictures and videos on the facebook groups (as will I) but this is here for anyone that doesnt know about them yet. The groups are Evolve Skateboard Owners and Evolve Carbon GT Owners. Everything below is my own opinion and as such will be very subjective! This was a beta version that I borrowed for an hour. Changing from Street to AT The first thing that needed to be done was swap over from street to AT. Its as easy as removing all the wheels and belt cover and then putting on the new ones. With manual tools this took us about 10 minutes but if you had the right tools ready and a ratchet or power drill I think it could be easily done in under 5. Look and Feel In my eyes, Jeff and the chaps at Evolve have got almos...

New House Old Tech. Replacing a Danfoss TP9000 with a Nest 3rd gen.

Me and my partner bought a new house and it took me ages to work out how the programmable thermostat works. So for ages I was looking buying a Nest Thermostat to replace the rubbish one the builders installed. I was even getting one for myself for Christmas, but ended up buying one of these instead!! Totally worth it, but back to my thermostat issues. Npower offer customers the chance to buy a cheap Nest for £129 compared to the usual £199 so thats what I did. (more…)

Recovered - Minecraft Cube A few years ago I made a bluetooth minecraft cube for a friends birthday. It got featured on hackaday.com of which I was and still am an avid reader. This for me was a great achievement :) Anyway somewhere along the line I actually managed to loose all of the information on the build! I was devastated. Long story short I think the traffic I got from HAD managed to get it archived by the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. So Im putting here for reference rather than anything else. Having read it, it's not that good, missed some key info and source code but was fun to do and I wanted to have it here to remember. I posted it on the forum on DangerousPrototypes.com and got featured on their blog too. Original Article After my flowers went down a treat on...

Valentines Day – A Blinky Bouquet

Again this is very much a blast from the past, early 2013 to be exact. Got me my first mention on hackaday.com and on the dangerousprototypes.com blog! It started on the DP forum but have copied here for my reference.   Hello All, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post something like this as its not really that electronically advanced. But it was fun to make so I thought I would share :) Long story short, I get alot of stick for not buying flowers (I think they are a waste of money) so I decided that I was going to make some that would never die. My first step was to find some way to make flowers, I decided on felt because I could buy it cheap from ebay. Some googling lead me to this tutorial for making LED flowers out of felt (http://techdiy.blogspot.co.uk/2007/10/...
